Designated Hunting Areas
The Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) were initiated in the 1950’s in Edgefield and McCormick Counties by South Carolina. The WMA program has approximately 1.4 million acres currently available. The major portions of the WMA lands in South Carolina are in the Old 96 District: the Central Piedmont Hunt Unit (Laurens County) and the Western Piedmont Hunt Unit (Abbevile, Edgefield, Greenwood and McCormick Counties). Non-hunters are asked to remember that only US Forest Service lands and those areas marked “WMA” are open to the public.
Sumter National Forest
Located in portions of Abbeville, Edgefield and Greenwood Counties and most of McCormick County, this natural area provides many recreational and sporting opportunities. For information call the US Forest Service at (803) 637-5396.
